Open to opportunities

Sergey Mikheev

Senior Python / Backend Engineer

I design and build backend systems: APIs, microservices, integrations, data and infrastructure.

What draws me are problems at the seam between code, data and infrastructure — you can neither design the service nor fix it without understanding the whole system around it.

About me

In development since 2019, the recent years on Python backends: FastAPI microservices, API and data-model design, integrations with external systems, PostgreSQL and ClickHouse, containerisation and running services in production.

A distinct part of the job is the people and decisions around the code: architecture, code review, mentoring, technical interviews. A good system outlives whoever wrote it only if the team understands why it is shaped the way it is.

I gravitate to problems that do not fit inside a single application. The cause of a failure usually sits at a different level from the failure itself: in the data model, in a query plan, in the network, or in someone else’s API that answered differently yesterday. That is the level I go down to.

Outside of work: Home Assistant and ESPHome, network hardware and OpenWrt, my own LLM infrastructure, 3D printing and electronics. Nearly everything I know about networks, operations and debugging live systems came from there.

Ufanet / UCAMS for Home Assistant

An ISP’s CCTV and intercom, opened up for a smart home

The provider exposes its cameras and intercom only through its own app. I reverse-engineered the private protocol and built an integration: RTSP and WebRTC cameras, intercom call history, snapshots and archive-clip retrieval through Home Assistant services. Installable via HACS and running in other people’s homes — hence the issues and the stars.

A map of Russian filling stations: fuel prices and availability

A product I own end to end: collecting and normalising data across fuel-station networks, the backend and database, a filterable map, SEO, and deployment to my own nginx VPS. There is nobody to split product decisions or on-call with.

Russian Railways seat-finder bot

Russian Railways seat-finder bot

Subscribe to seats that do not exist yet

A Telegram bot on aiogram: step-by-step train search, then a subscription that polls the railway API every few minutes and pings you the moment a seat frees up. Filters by seat type, finding seats next to each other, and parsing the carriage seat map. The hard part was not technical but interface: the whole dialogue lives in a single message the bot rewrites, so the chat stays clean. SQLite for subscriptions, pytest and GitHub Actions inside.

Experience

Product company

Senior software engineer · 2022 — present

  • Internal services on FastAPI and PostgreSQL: DDD, modular architecture, dependency injection.
  • Design of data pipelines and processing infrastructure; ETL, parsing, normalisation.
  • Integrations with external APIs and known-unstable sources: retries, logging, monitoring.
  • Co-author of an internal ClickHouse framework — ORM and migrations; data access became uniform across teams.
  • Single sign-on on ORY Hydra: centralised authentication and access management.
  • A data update server that replaced delivery by hand.
  • Architecture, code review, mentoring, technical interviews.

Product company

Software engineer · 2021—2022

  • Backend of a large mobile application: building services in a microservice team.
  • Testing and debugging services: pytest, unittest.
  • Running team delivery in Jira and Kaiten.

Freelance

Python developer · 2019—2021

  • Scripts and automation built to order: HTTP APIs, parsing and normalising data.
  • Bots for Telegram and VK.
  • Site scraping with multiprocessing, results written to SQL: SQLAlchemy, SQLite.
  • Deploying and running the services myself on Heroku.
